You’d have thought that, 150 years on from the first agonizings over Darwinism, we would all have accepted that evolution was a more intricate and beautiful process than anything that could be dreamed of by a mystic, that life was wonderful, exciting, fulfilling in itself. But not for a creature caught up in it. I was part of the home team, on the winning side, fist in the air, cheering in solidarity. Nor did I feel that my self had shrunk, or grown insignificant, but rather that the bird and I and landscape were at that moment part of a larger being.
